ABOUT BCSS

HISTORY

The Director started Ruhinda Aids Community Initiatives in 1995 Western Uganda.  The Organisation was assisting AIDS affected people mostly orphans by providing them with scholastic materials, school fees and uniforms.  The project catered for 87 children but after primary education these children would not proceed to secondary.  This prompted him to start a secondary education complex to assist these children.

THE SCHOOL AND LOCATION

Bitooma Comprehensive Secondary School is a private O’ Level Mixed secondary school, registered with the Government of Uganda and offers both Day and Boarding facilities. The school has an organisational structure with the Directors handling the policy matters and Parent Teachers Association handling the school management while the head teacher is concerned with the Administration and discharge of the
daily office duties assisted by both the teaching and non-teaching
staff.

The school is located  355 Kilometers from the capital city of Uganda, Kampala and 11 kilometers along Ishaka - Rukungiri road, just before Bitooma model Primary School, Mitooma Sub-County in Bushenyi District. Its immediate catchment area includes schools like Rukararwe, Bitooma, Igambiro, Nkanga, Kanyegyero, Ikimba, Kirembe, Rutaka, Rwagashani, Kyamushongora, Kirembe, Birimbi and Nyakahita Primary schiools.  Altogether with an average population of around 4,000 pupils. This number cannot be absorbed by one or two schools.

CONTEXT AND TARGET POPULATION

The categories of children in this school, are mostly children from HIV/AIDS affected families and children from poor families with low income.  These orphans are mainly under the care of their grand parents.  Worst still, the parents of these children sold off their land as they tried to pay for their medical bills thus leaving their siblings landlines.

Mitooma County has a population of almost over 50,000 people. Mitooma Sub-county has been with three senior secondary schools (Bitooma inclusive).  However, due to high school dues in other schools (85,000 day scholars and 150,000 for boarders), there has been a big influx of students to Bitooma C.S.S, whose school fees is  60,000 day scholars and 100,000 boarders. With the Universal Primary Education, the situation continues to worsen.

Also, with the increased awareness of girl child education, the parents prefer to have their girls in boarding. Thus a need to expand the boarding facilities to accommodate them.

In 2006, the school population was 232: 137 F (59%) and 95 M (41%). Out of 232 students, 137 students {57 M (42%) and 80 F (58%)} were orphans.

Currently (2007) the school population stands at 252: 147 F (58%) and 105 M (42%). Out of 252 students, 70 (28%) students are orphans {33 M and 37 F }.

This has financial implications in terms of school fees collections, as most of them cannot afford it.  Thus a need for external support.

The number of students served has greatly reduced from that of 2006 as most of the orphans have dropped out ofschool.
